Dental odontectomy is a minor oral surgical procedure performed to remove an impacted tooth that cannot be extracted through a simple method. It is most commonly indicated for impacted third molars (wisdom teeth), teeth with abnormal root morphology, or those encased in bone or soft tissue.
After local anesthesia, an incision is made in the gum to expose the impacted tooth. Surrounding bone may be removed, and the tooth is often sectioned into smaller parts for easier removal. The site is then cleaned, irrigated, and sutured, followed by post-operative care instructions.
The patient will have the problematic tooth successfully removed, alleviating associated pain, infection, or risk of cyst formation. With proper healing and care, normal oral function is restored, and complications such as swelling or discomfort typically resolve within a few days to a week. Follow-up visits ensure appropriate healing and function, to do check-up and remove the dental suture.
